In Loving Memory of Damone Chavez Johnson
September 5, 1978 – February 5, 2026
Damone Chavez Johnson, affectionately known as "Mone," "One Leg," and by the
family nickname "Chicken George," was born on September 5, 1978, in Bridgeport,
Connecticut, to Jack Edmonds and the late Deborah Johnson. He peacefully departed
this life on February 5, 2026, at his home in Fayetteville, North Carolina.
At the tender age of four, Damone survived a tragic accident that left him disabled.
Despite enduring multiple surgeries throughout his life, he never allowed his
circumstances to define him. His resilience, strength, and determination became
hallmarks of the man he grew to be.
Damone spent his early childhood in Bridgeport, Connecticut, where he attended
Waltersville School. Around the age of ten, he relocated with his mother to Fayetteville,
North Carolina, where he continued to defy expectations and overcome obstacles.
He graduated from Cape Fear High School, Class of 1999. While there, Damone
actively participated in basketball and wrestling, earning numerous trophies and
competition titles. He also played recreational baseball and even tried out for the
football team. Although he did not make the team due to concerns about his leg, he
remained determined to be involved and proudly served as a team hydrator. His
perseverance and team spirit during those years forged lifelong friendships that he
cherished deeply.
To know Damone was to love him. He never met a stranger and possessed a heart of
gold. His infectious personality, humor, and unwavering love for others left a lasting
impression on everyone he encountered.
Damone was preceded in death by his mother, Deborah Eileen Johnson; his paternal
grandparents, Flossi and Henry Edmonds; and his maternal grandmother, Maggie
"Margaret" Johnson.
He leaves to cherish his loving memory his children, Alexis Nocito of Orlando, Florida,
and Jamari Nocito of Haines City, Florida; Godson, Tristan Powell of Fayetteville, North
Carolina; his father, Jack Edmonds; his siblings, Dashawn Johnson of Fayetteville,
North Carolina; Shantwon Dockery (Eric) of Clayton, North Carolina; Lashanda Perez,
Monique Perez, Chazmarie Otero, Epifanio Edmonds, and Valerie Bermudez, all of
Bridgeport, Connecticut; his aunts, Josephine Edmonds of Bridgeport, Connecticut, and
Emma Thaggard (James) of Fayetteville, North Carolina; his uncles, Jay Johnson,
Michael Edmonds, and Eugene Edmond, all of Bridgeport, Connecticut; along with a
host of nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends.
Damone's life was a testament to perseverance, courage, and unconditional love.
Though he faced adversity, he rose above it with grace and strength. His legacy will
forever live on in the hearts of those who loved him.
